Back in March, Sony Ericsson delivered some very good news for those of you who own an Xperia X10. The company changed its mind then, and contrary to previous statements, said it would be starting work on updating the Xperia X10 to Android 2.3 Gingerbread.
A few months have passed, and today Sony Ericsson has published an update on the status of the Android 2.3 Gingerbread update for the Xperia X10. All seems to be going well. As a consequence of user feedback, Sony Ericsson will even include the camera UI seen in Android 2.1 in the update. DLNA support, however, won't make it, since it required some additional certification which would have delayed Sony Ericsson's promised ‘summer' timeline for the update.
Android 2.3 Gingerbread on the Xperia X10 will basically be an experience very similar to what you can see on the Xperia Arc. Even the pervasive Facebook integration will be there.
The rollout of the update is expected to start at the beginning of August. Devices bought unlocked and unbranded will get it first, while some carrier-customized versions of the X10 may never see the update to Gingerbread unfortunately. That, of course, has more to do with those carriers' policies than with Sony Ericsson.
