The Android 2.3 Gingerbread update for the Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 may be out as early as sometime this week. The Xperia X10 launched running Android 1.6 in what was a world filled wit 2.x devices even back then. Sony Ericsson tried to subsequently forget all about the X10, but a couple of consumer backlashes later, the company changed its mind and said it would even update the X10 to Gingerbread.
When? This summer. That was the first word. Then that got changed into ‘this August'. And now it looks like Sony Ericsson may be set to deliver the update a bit early. An employee responded to a question on Facebook by stating the following:
I got this information yesterday.
“The launch of the 2.3 software for X10 is getting closer, and the planned release date is approx. w30. The date could still be changed, since the launch is depending on operators approval. The software will be rolled out continuously, just like the earlier 2.1 release. The exact launch date is depending on market and operators approval, so it will unfortunately not be possible to give precise information on launch dates for each market/operator. You will get more information once the roll out has started.”
…so it could be available any day. Keep in touch with your local teams for more specific information since I probably won't get any more market specific info than this.
Since we're already two days into the 30th week of this year, it's safe to take this guy's word and assume that the rollout will indeed start sometime this week. Of course, you needn't panic if your Xperia X10 won't be running Gingerbread by Sunday.
Like all rollouts, this will be staggered too, so it may take a while for it to reach all devices. Also, keep in mind that unlocked devices are the ones receiving the update now. Carrier-specific variants, as stated above, depend on approval from the network operators and as such usually come later.
